Louisville: Seventh Most Dangerous

Louisville - Rated Seventh Most Dangerous

All lanes are bike lanes
In November of 2009 two national transportation organizations (Transportation for America and the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership) released the results of a nationwide study ranking cities according to the relative safety of pedestrians (pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents). Louisville ranked the seventh worst in the nation.

To correct this, we are proposing a clear, unambiguous, absolute pedestrian right-of-way within three (3) blocks of schools - inside and outside crosswalks.
Our children must be protected. (On the morning of 27 February 2009 Louisville school crossing guard Elaine Elgie was hit and killed after helping a child cross the road at her school crosswalk.)

We are also proposing that Jefferson County Public Schools modify the school assignment plan to guarantee that students and parents who commit to walking and/or bicycling to school may attend their neighborhood school. Restructuring JCPS's transportation scheme can allow us to redirect funds away from student busing and into low performing schools.
